MAKE YOUR VOICE FLY
FAQs
All the most common questions about lessons, what they involve, payments, policies etc.
What do singing lessons involve?
Singing lessons typically fall into two sections. To begin, we warm the voice and use targeted exercises to develop different aspects of the voice. This is followed by repertoire work, where we develop songs and apply technical skills to maximise vocal freedom and expression.
What do speech lessons involve?
Speech lessons look similar to singing lessons, in that they develop the same technical aspects of the voice. Speech students have included realtors, lawyers, medical professionals and actors. Students apply technical and presentational skills to professional text and situations, as well as poetry and prose, or scripts for aspiring actors.
What do theory lessons involve?
Theory lessons develop musicianship, or music literacy. Students develop listening (aural) skills, as well as an awareness of style, harmony, structure and history of music. Lessons involve workbooks, games and exploration of rhythm and melody.
How do online lessons work?
Online lessons are conducted via Google Meets or Discord. Other platforms may be possible, but the audio settings may make singing difficult. Students play accompaniments from an auxillary device while they sing, allowing Jo to hear them as though they are having a lesson in the studio.
A full guide for online lessons is available for all students.
Can I do exams? Can I compete in Eisteddfods?
Yes! Both children and adults have completed singing and theory exams with the studio, with many receiving Distinctions and awards from examining bodies. Most students undertake their exams with Trinity College London, which provides an international qualification. Exams can be conducted in person with the examiner at different times during the year, or can be recorded.
Exams are a great way to focus your learning, develop performance skills and receive constructive feedback.

Similarly, students may wish to sing in competitions and festivals. Many students have competed in the Queensland Vocal Competition Festival (in May) with most students placing in their sections.
Can I record my lesson?
Yes! This is encouraged, however, the recording and advice are for you alone. Listening to your lesson (and keeping notes in a diary) are a great way to improve your learning.

Students sometimes make recordings for loved ones as a special gift, and have even used a cappella apps to create their own arrangements of songs.

Additionally, students typically record some piano accompaniment during their lessons for exercises and songs, as well as song lyrics in other languages.
What ages do you teach?
Jo teaches students of all ages. Her youngest student so far was 5, her oldest, 82. If you have a passion for singing or want to develop your speaking voice, Songbird Voice Studio can help.
How much are lessons? How long are they?
Lessons may be 30, 45, or 60 minutes long. Longer lessons are available for advanced students. Most students have a 45-minute lesson. The Queensland Music Teacher's Association recommends a rate of $82/hr. The studio's current rate is $75/hr. Please enquire about current rates.
How do I pay?
Clients can pay for a term of lessons (billed at the end of term) or per lesson. Direct deposit is preferred, however, cash is also accepted.
What if I need to cancel my lesson?
The studio has a 36-hour cancellation policy. The policy was developed to assist students in still having a lesson in most circumstances if they cannot attend in person. If a student cancels their lesson within 36 hours of their lesson, they will be offered several online options. Lessons canceled with less than 36 hours' notice may incur the full fee (including no-shows).
New students will be offered a Google form to complete stating the current cancellation policy details.
